Rugby Myths

RUGBY at HOFSTRA

   ----MYTHS----

Myth 1.
Size:
First and foremost, you DO NOT have to be big!  Sure, there are some big
players but there are just as many small ones.  And remember, you'll be
playing against OTHER COLLEGE STUDENTS!  Smaller players need to be quick and
good passers of the ball.  These are the skill positions and size is not a
prerequisite.  Athletic ability, willingness to learn, and a desire to
succeed are what needs to be big.
*Rugby is a game for all shapes and sizes.  There are different
playing positions that cater to every size of player.*

Myth 2.
Pads:
"But I'll get hurt because you guys hit and dont use pads!"  In Rugby you are
taught to tackle, not to hit.  The rules of the game state that when a player
tackles they MUST WRAP with their arms.  Players don't go into tackles as
hard as they do in football because theyre NOT wearing pads.  IT doesn't
really matter if the player you tackle makes a few extra yards because when
they are tackled they must release the ball.  And finally, ONLY THE PERSON
WITH THE BALL CAN BE TACKLED, so there are no clips or blind hits.

Myth 3.
You've never played before:
I've got some good news and some bad news for you.
First the bad
news: You've never played before and don't know the game.
Now the good
news: You've never plaed before and don't know the game!
Thank goodness you don't have any bad rugby playing habits!  The game is easy
to pick up and it's fun to play.  There are elements of basketball, soccer,
football, field hockey, and wrestling all combined in Rugby so if you have
talent in any of these sports, than more than likely you can play rugby.

Myth 4.
Minor club sport:
Don't think that rugby is a minor sport.  Rugby is played worldwide in over
100 countries.  In the USA alone, over 600 colleges play rugby and there is a
national collegiate championship.  You can go anywhere in the world and join
a rugby club, making valuable contacts and enjoying the game.

Rugby is a contact sport and there will be plenty of bumps and bruises, there
is also the risk of serious injury, but no more so than any other contact
sport.  The rules of the game, the spirit of good sportsmanship, and the
techniques of playing make it fun and safe for thousands of players.

                                          GIVE IT A TRY!!!!!!!
